This evening myself and my two children (aged 9 and 5) dipped our toes in the cultural world of Shakespeare! I was slightly concerned that the whole thing might go way above my daughters head, but as soon as we entered the room I knew we were going to be OK. We were met by Emily, a young girl, who was keen to speak to people as they arrived, find out their names and where they came from. There also happened to be a handsome man who she rather took a shine to!
Emily has just moved home and when her father asks her to unpack her books she stumbles upon a copy Romeo and Juliette and this is where the fun begins. Emily starts to tell us the traditional story and we are introduced to the characters, who speak in ‘Shakesperean’ but dress in modern day attire.
The story is the one we all know and love. It is fast paced, quite literally in places, and very funny but none of the sentiment is lost and by the end you could hear a pin drop. Both my children were glued to it, they both laughed out loud and as the story drew to a close my 9 year old had tears in his eyes. My 5 year old didn’t understand everything but she could not stop watching either. The characters are all fantastic, Emily in particular is brilliant, and the story is told in 1 hour and it doesn’t feel like a single part of the tale is missing. I highly recommend it.
